I bet your starter was smoking hot! Is that what all the smoke was from? Now get those GPs hooked up!

cell 02-06-2009 02:10 AM

no, the engine just has a nasty, nasty smoking habit until it gets warmed up. investigating that is next on the to-do list :)

now I just have a few "little things" to wrap up, like installing the seat...

clm 02-06-2009 06:07 AM

Where did the hairdrier idea come from? Thats a first for me:confused: I am not sure it helped much- Its not a cummings ya know- LOL
Its really hard on the engine /starter ,cranking it that long. It may be what is causing the smokeing issue.

KAdams4458 02-06-2009 06:37 AM

In a pinch, you can run a jumper the glow plugs with a set of jumper cables. I know I've done it. I'm sure it would beat the hell out of a hair dryer.

As for that smoking... My non-turbo does the same thing. I have no idea why. Perhaps MB equipped the car with a mosquito fogging feature?

Looking good so far. Keep it up!

P.S. Forgot to add that your starter isn't going to be happy with you if you don't start using the glow plugs.

cell 02-06-2009 08:36 AM

yeah, I was counting to 30 when running the starter, and then giving it a 30 to 60 second rest. What's the recommended upper limit of how long to crank a starter?

actually, yeah, the hair dryer idea came from hearing that cummins engines have a heater in the intake. I have a heat-shrink tubing gun sitting around here somewhere, which is what I probably should have used (much hotter).

cell 02-06-2009 08:36 AM

oh, and the smoke is definitely coming out of the back of the turbo, and the smoke starts the second you start cranking. (right now there is no exhaust on it at all).

bgkast 02-07-2009 02:21 AM

You could have a cold miss that is causing the smoke.

how does the transmission behave if it doesn't have any vacuum? I still need to cap off the various loose ends of the vacuum system, and I'm wondering if I'll ruin the tranny if I take it for a test drive with no vacuum.

bgkast 02-08-2009 12:04 AM

It will shift harshly

neumann 02-08-2009 08:07 AM

Looks like a big **** eating grin around 4:30...I was grinning with you :) Congrats on a job well done.

I am seriously thinking about doing this to a 65 Ford F100.

chronolog:
1:33 - sputters, but doesn't start
3:20 - finally starts

I used a hair dryer to try and help with the start, as I didn't have the glow plugs hooked up. I think the hair dryer helped, as what you don't see in the video is the first battery which I drained without using a hairdryer...

(hopefully no-one will flame me for starting without an air filter -- i wound up leaving the U-shaped tube at my parent's place. D'oh!)

what needs vacuum

Dont run the truck without vacuum to the tranz. Seems like three things minimum. transmission, power brakes ,and you need to also swap over the switch over valve that runs from the back intake manifold banjo bolt to the switchover valve on the firewall -to the port in the shutoff valve on the IP- and see if there is vaccum running from your main arterie to the switchover valve. Cap off the other port that ran to the ignition switch and rigg a gorilla knob- A pull cable,or the selonoid shut off -or the Semi truck vacuum valve they discussed. Will also be interesting to see if the speedo cable can thread onto the chevy truck guage? could you let me know about the 116 and 292? thanks, Panzzer

hey panzzer, I finally put up some pictures of the chevy 292 engine being rebuilt.

http://jason.pepas.com/photos/truck-pics-igal/

sorry that's a ton of pics to sort through. The one issue with the engine is that you will probably want to get a different carb. as far as I can tell, the 1 BBL carb it came with only had an idle mixture adjustment, and no power mixture adjustment, and it was jetted way rich, so I was getting about 9 mpg initially.

however, I hacked together a little valve body for an idle air control stepper motor which would allow me to create a controlled vacuum leak, thus thinning out the mixture. Using this I got it up to about 14 mpg on the highway.

Here's my mileage for the truck during the time I used the 292. You can see it go up markedly in the last few months. That's just from thinning out the mixture.

detailed pictures of the w116 body (the leftovers) are here:

what are they worth to you? make me an offer I can't refuse :)

leftovers

Hi, I got an Offenhauser two 1 barrel intake to run upside down and a pair of ancient carter updrafts for the COE. The truck is a Monster, I have heard more than once that the GMC COE army trucks-like this was single rear axle -were what the designers of the original unimog were studying closely. now they got a turbo exhaust manifold and with a modified 4 bbl intake with injector bungs welded in and a throttle body--and a megasquirt compooter, it could be hairdried and infected.. I have to ask the 116 guy what he could swing for the Maroon 116 bod---My 85 300cd is the same color, every time I see a car on the shop forum they are calling it something different-china red, berolorot, etc. My original dealer paperwork calls it Desert Red.

made some radiator supports. I did this to raise the radiator up about two inches, because the filler cap was not the highest point in the system.

these were made with bed frame angle iron and some square tubing.

shortened up the exhaust downtube.

here was the original, in the 300SD:

chopped it out:

shortened it, and welded it back together:
