Water in my W126 Trunk LID

Ever since I fixed my water leak into my trunk I have been having a strange problem, my trunk lid is filling with water when it rains, then will dump the water into the trunk when I open it. There is a drain hole in the left side of the lower lip of the trunk lid that had a factory looking plug in it which I have removed. This seems to help some, but it will still dump a bit of water into my trunk when I open it after rain. At least I don't have to worry about the trunk lid rusting, it is the factory aluminum piece.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you

Not sure if the w126 uses trunk emblems that are pinned to the trunk lid. If so check that there are no leaks. The lip where the emblems are can hold some water.

Also check the MB star, it's bolted on the lid.

A couple of thoughts:

1) IIRC the trunk weatherstrip itself channels water to the rear edge. I had a problem with a leak into the trunk of my car that resolved itself when I lifted are reglued the section of weatherstrip near the point of leakage. Maybe your weatherstrip is deformed somewhere and pooling water where it can get into the lid.

2) Can you drill drain holes into the lower rear edge of the trunk lid so it drains over the tail lights as it fills. This doesn't address water collecting in the lid but maybe it will keep water from dumping into the trunk.

Mine is a w123, but I recently opened the trunk to find the trunk lid drenched. This is months after I had fixed my leaky trunk with a new rear windshield seal so I was confused. It turns out there were some leaves stuck in two places in the trunk seal, one on the left, one on the right, so water was getting stuck in the middle and flowing into the trunk. Haven't had a problem since I cleared it out. You have probably checked this already, but I thought I'd mention it.
