did you win the lottery or just hit your head?

I looked up my cost on a new 5 speed for a 16 valve once for a car I was thinking about getting... $3,300. That killed that idea pretty quick.

I've also done a turbo motor to non turbo car swap. We put my 85 300D's engine and trans into a 78 300CD body, but ditched the extra vacuum and electronics the 85's setup had. It ran awesome, really woken up by the diff in the non turbo car.

For what it is worth, I spoke the folks at Benz Friendz a long time ago, and they felt the non-vacuum modulated transmission would be strong enough to handle a turbo motor - At the same time, they had apparently never actually bolted the two together and tested the theory, but they did confirm that they will bolt together.

Try it and see what happens?

a new 5 speed manual for the 77 is $3800. plus ill need a slave clyinder, pedal cluster etc. I think I will try to locate a good turbo automatic tranny.

One could get a good start on a fleet of driver quality W123's for the price of that conversion using new dealer parts!

Yeah, an auto. I don't blame you.

I need to add this in here -as I dont want you to waste your time and money on somthing that will not last.
A crank on a 617 engine will not last if it is machined down. They were ferritic nitro-carburized at the factory(http://www.ahtweb.com/ferritic.cfm) and machining them down undos this process and will not stand up as well to the abuse of the turbo. Sure you most machine shops tell you its not that big a deal and get your money , turnig down your crankshaft- they are not liable. BUT -It wont last long -I know from experience! LOL!
