Heat shield
Why, Brian? Because he called it a "123?" I think the heat shield he means is the one I've arrowed in the photo. It can be in the way for some things but I've never had to remove it.

In my picture, the air filter goes to the right of the red arrow, over the air intake pipe (black tube with hole). The aluminum piece that the arrow points to is not specifically designed as a heat shield but does block some engine heat, especially radiant heat from the exhaust manifold, trap cat, its later replacement, the turbo, and the down pipe. The air filter case in a W124 is plastic as is the coolant expansion tank. (Both have been removed as part of the work that was going on when I took that picture last year.)

ya, it just causes problems for reassembling, and its been removed and put back so many times that its just a mess, and its going to take me at least half an hour to do, and then when the car breaks again, its coming back out, so if i can skip this step then i want to
