Exclamation

The weather around us is consistantly cold. I glow it once over about 25 Fahrenheit, and twice below 25. Something that might help is a quick punch of the accelerator half-way down, rather quickly then glow it. Do not wait long between glow cycles because the amount of heat created by the plug disperses very rapidly in a cold engine. I adjusted my valves after about 50,000 highway miles and noted easier cold startups. I now adjust them with the snapon wrenches I modified, which makes the job much more pleasent, in fact so pleasent that I adjust 'em about every 3 to fourth oil change.

Cheers!

Do not cycle the key. The glowplugs stay on for 1 minute or until the starter is used no matter what the light on the dash is doing.

1) Glow it with the door open. When the dome light gets brighter the glow plugs have clicked off (It could be up to 45 seconds) If it is REALLY cold, glow it twice.

2) Push the accelerator down 1/4 of the way

3) Crank it. Keep cranking it until the engine is really running. It could take a few seconds after it starts firing to really catch.

I would suggest that you do the valves as soon as possible. If you do not feel up to it or if it is too cold to work on the car, take it to either the dealer or to your indy. It is really worth it.

Why 1/4 of the way?

The manual says to push tha accelerator 3 times, then floor it. It works great for me no matter how cold

My owner's manual (1980 300 TD) says cranking up to one minute will not harm the starter.

Why does everyone pump the throttle for? i seen this mentioned in a vw 1.6 book before when it got below 0 degrees to not pull the timing advancement/idle controller up leave it off till it began to fire?

I can see maybe pushing it down a little to increase the idle but pushing the throttle to the floor seems silly and pumping it i'm really confused about does the thing have a carb?

I wouldnt count on Boschs for anything without testing them. Have no experience with beru yet. but I've had 4/5 bosch not last a year. I put in 5 new ones this fall AND reamed the holes, maybe that'll be the difference.

seventeen degrees below zero today, I'm glad I don't need to go anywhere.

read the book guys,
it says pump throttle to make sure not frozen, then 1 full glow cycle, hold WOT foot to the floor and crank,

i promise you, within 4 cranks it will start, when it does let off but hold a little throttle and let it rev down slowly so its not jumpin or shakin

dont stop and try again, you may only have 1 chance, hold WOT until it starts and rev down slow

pumping the pedal prior to starting it will make no difference. the best thing to do is have the throttle patially open while it is cranking over. I usually cycle my glow plugs up to 3 times. Does anyone know a good alternative to bosch glow plugs? When i bought mine i had the choice of getting NGK but they were a lot more. I am a fan of NGK spark plugs so i am wondering if anyone has had better experience with them.
