oil cooler lines

The car is 240D 77, do you folks replace these oil cooler lines from time to time? I hear horror stories of total engine failure when one of these lines goes bust.
How much trouble is it to change these hoses?

Not weeping, but they are old. I will be taking the 240D to the shop for valve adjustment soon and thought about having them replace these lines, preventive maintenance.

I don't believe there's a recommended replacement interval. If the hose portion is hard or cracked and weeping, replace ASAP. If the hose portions are still soft like they are when new, they're fine.

Problems can be created when removing those lines, like stripping the fittings on your oil cooler or oil filter housing. So if they don't need it, I'd leave them alone.

The early 240D with the otherwise PITA York A/C compressor (or none at all) is a relative breeze. Yes , it is possible to bugger the cooler- it is also possible that if you do nothing your hoses will blow of old age. Your choice.

You might want to do a search of some of the Oil Cooler Hose removal Threads. The reason is that the Oil Cooler Hose Nuts are sometimes corroded to the Aluminum threads of the Oil Cooler.
I lost a few threads when I unscrewd my upper Oil Cooler Nut on mine.
There is a repair for the stripped threads but is extra work.

screwed nipples

If you do mess up the oil cooler threads, there is a fix it from MB called screwed nipples.

www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=104244 post #5

also do a search, there is another thread showing pictures.

If the rubber hose is hard and not pliable, weeping around the crimp, or sweating, replace them.

I have driven my early 77 240D for 26 yeras, its all manual. If I have one criticism on this car it is the York compressor, I always maintained the A/C system, it never cooled the cabin [properly, but is sure drained the engine of what little power it had. When I replaced the motor I did not install the A/C, so the car has no A/C but that is one main disadvantage of 240D, this car is not designed to carry the A/C load IMHO.

Those old York compressors were such power hogs that they affected all cars that way. It probably is just a little more pronounced on the 240D. I remember having to consciously give it a little more "go" when driving cars of that era.

Chad,

Thanks. After I got the parts #'s from the stealership, I found them on ********az for only $120 shipped for both lines vs. $387 at the dealership. Thanks again.

I order most of my filters and odds & ends from ************************. They do have the oil cooler lines for my 240D at about $70 each.

Be vewy vewy careful when you unscrew the nut from the oil cooler. I did mine when it was dark and I couldn't see very well and as a result I ended up breaking the oil cooler. It was a nightmare finding an oil cooler then having to replace the line.

The way I remove these is to cut across the steel nuts on the old lines with a hacksaw, being careful to minimize damage to the threads on the cooler. Stick a hefty screwdriver in the gap and twist to break the corrosion between the nut and the cooler. I have done 3 of these and haven't lost a cooler yet.
