Special Note: If you have one pulled on a 300TD, It says Model/Year 300TDT 1987. I guess a bottle of whiteout could take car of that.

If you can't get them to pull one, give me the VIN and I will try at my dealer. The service writer is a good guy and may do it for me.

back a long time ago.........

I think last summer or spring....I was investigating either a 98 or 99 E300D ....MAYBE, I was going to get my wife into a diesel...you know....

Anyway, I don't remember where the car was....but the son was selling ....His Dad had bought the car new and was always dealer serviced in Austin. I got the name of the dealer from the son....made the car....and asked them if they could send me the service records. They were hesitant ....and I don't remember if the son called and said it was okay or what.....but they did finally send them to me. It was like a 6 or 8 page fax.

I gave up trying to get my wife into a 10 year old diesel.....she says she doesn't want to drive an old car. Her old Saab ruined her. She needs a newer, "always" dependable car. Too bad I broke half the driver's door handle on her 2000 Camry --- I see broken driver door handles on those cars all the time now.

I actually already saw your post on the Craigslist thread --- can you tell, I'm starting to get the "another car itch"?

Sorry for the hijack, Jimmy.

I tried 2 local dealerships and both cited privacy policies as the reason why the service history could not be given to me.
If you could swing that, or anybody else I would be most appreciative.
I'm also awaiting the VIN on a Green '95. High miles though.....

OK, I just spoke with the Dr. who owns the car. Tranny was rebuilt a couple months ago. It was a failure while he was driving, he had to be towed and had it rebuilt.
He also said the wiring harness has been replaced. AC was serviced/repaired last summer. I forgot to ask about the evap, but did leave him another message.
He is rather firm at $6K due to the type of car and all the repairs completed.
Thoughts from the masses?
Did I mention that it's black......

[btw, checked the backseat. Actually did NOT find a dress of the Captain's wife in this one......]

**edit**

Went and test drove it again today. They certainly are a slug compared to a W123 with a rogue T.
A few things I noticed:
*Tach is inop
*AC does not blow through the center vents, but the compressor does come on. [unlike an '85 W123 with inop tach]
*One time when I pulled into turn lane and stopped to make a u-turn, it idled really really roughly for a couple seconds then smoother out. I thought it was gonna die.
*windshield washer fluid light is on, and reservoir is empty. Looks like a coiled heater assy inside there. Does that make that oddly shaped reservoir quite pricey?
*grill cracked
* tranny lines at radiator seeping a bit.
*oh, and as stated earlier, glow plug light does not come on prior to starting, but does come on during after-glow.
*wiring harness appears to have been replaced. [checked at glow plug relay connector]
*receipt for tranny rebuild. $500 bucks to remove and replace, and $1050 to another location to do the rebuild. Not itemized. Isn't that too cheap for a complete rebuild?

Waiting to hear back from him.......

...........Heard back. We're $300 apart. He will call me back tomorrow.

I would want to confirm that the evaporator was done when the A/C was fixed.

I don't think that car should feel like a slug compared to a 123 turbo. It has 134 hp @ 5,000 rpm. That's only about 16 less than the OM603 in the '87 and that isn't a slug. Jeremy has a '85 300D and a '96 E300, so he should be able to tell you the difference. I know it is a 210, but the engine is the same.

So how do you feel about changing the glow plugs in an OM606?

Black would still be a deal breaker for me, unless the car was perfect.

If it wasn't black it would already be in my driveway.
Interior is perfect. It isn't just really nice, it is a 10 out of 10. Between that, a rebuilt tranny, new wiring harness and 4 almost brand new Michelins, it is very tempting. Windows are already tinted. Engine has been steam cleaned, and I love clean! It would be hard to find another one at this type of starting condition, so I might have to fight through my color nemesis.
There is a good door ding on front passenger door, and a nice little dent on top of driver's side rear door. Of course ZERO rust. There would be no compromise on that point!
We'll see. I've kinda talked myself into it, so when I speak with him tomorrow I'm guessing I'll cave. Piece of mind is nice to have, and I'm telling myself there is value in that.
There seems to be more threads lately on the OM606 powered cars, so I'll have some very good resources for help. After all, we know that all of these stupid things have their problems.

It looks like the interior is in very good shape.....Most 1995 E300D's are not slugs (at least the ones I have driven), it is quicker than my W123 300D Turbo (with new crate engine and KKK Turbo) and its much more pleasant sounding. Honestly I prefer it to my chipped '99 Turbodiesel. I am not sure what you are offering but the guy probably wants to dump the car, if its not exactly what you are looking for then why pay the same for what you would pay for a car you really wanted? If you really need the car then go for it, but if not why get something in a color you really don't want? Your the one that has to live with it.

The 1995 E300D is the last W124 chassis with all of the improvements (or gadgets waiting to break) that were added during the ten-year production run. Nicer trim, more wood, two air bags, better stereo, some "convenience" electronics. The engine is the same as my '96 E300D/W210 has, except that it is less electronic – I think a '95 will run even if the electrical system dies, whereas the '96 won't as it is "fly by wire." The transmissions are pretty much the same, 722.4 4-speed mechanical.

My '96 OM606 does not have the low end torque of my '87 OM603 – I notice every time I switch between the '87 and the '96. The OM606 needs to rev up to make any power but it goes very nicely once it gets going and would run away from a 617. Note that I have never driven a later model W210 with the turbo 606 engine – I suspect it would spoil me. My personal preference is for the 124 chassis.

The large fuel tank in the 124 chassis combined with the good fuel economy of the 606 engine had Mercedes advertising a 750 mile range for that model. YMMV, as we say. The 606 is a quiet engine, quieter than the 603. Makes the 123/617 feel and sound like the tank that it really is.

Removing the intake manifold is not difficult but you need to have a manual or someone to walk you through it the first time, so you don't break anything expensive. If the crankcase ventilation pipes have not been replaced, you may find that they are leaking dirty oil all over the valve cover. I ended up replacing most of the bits and pieces. Clean the inside thoroughly while you have it off. I have replaced two glow plugs so far on my '96 and have not had any problems with sticking.

The '95 has less electronics in the EGR system and should not cause problems if you want to defeat EGR. The '96 is much more electronic; I'm not sure if the '95 had an early version of the computerized read-out system or not.

Anyway, I think a '95 would be a good car, definitely easier to DIY than later models.

Jeremy
