Removing butyl sealant

What can I use to remove butyl sealant and not damage anything? I accidentally got some on the car.

Try some WD40 or some solvent.

Is the Butyl soft and not set up? Most solvents that will remove some sealants, will damage the paint or remove it.

There is a product the body shops use when preparing to sand and paint a vehicle called "wax and grease remover" does not hurt the paint.

when I was sealing my back window, I was using a 3M Urathane sealant that comes in a calking tube. I wiped off the excess that oozed out along the edge, then used a rag soaked in the solvent and a clean rag behind it.

Gasoline might work also, It won`t damage the paint, evaporates quickly.

You may be able to use a razor blade if the Butyl is soft and not set up.

when I replaced my back window, I thought I could use a razor blade to gently slice through the urathane sealant the shop used to seal the window. well with all my screwing around I gouged the paint past the where the gasket edge lines up.

Soooo, I ended up repainting the roof, but justified doing it because it looked like the clear coat was was on it`s way out .

I work with butyl daily. It is used as a sealant for the corners of water channel for sunroofs at our plant. How much did you get on the car? Is it in clumps or smears? In general, we use our thumbs on smears, rubbing like you would to remove excess contact cement. A little heat, just enough to make it more pliable will help as well. Then we use d-limonene (orange oil solvent) to wipe the residue, if any, then a clean cloth. Biodiesel, straight will work as well as it is a solvent.
Clumps are heated then rolled off, cleaning up any residue as previously stated.

I have yet to remove windshield sealant this way, but the butyl sealant used in my 1962 streamline travel trailer comes right off easily with naptha, which is the primary constituent of the aforementioned wax and grease remover, and a lot of other products. It leaves very little residue, which can then be cleaned up with alcohol.

...edited yep, works
