Any one year updates on durability of the LEDs?

I'm building a parts list for my dash repair and am thinking about the LEDs.

I bought and installed a set of super white LEDs in June and have had them in my cluster panel since then. Everything is working as of now.

For the 30$ total I spent on them I find it one of the best upgrades one can do for our old cars. The original bulbs are just so lacking.

ya, they burn out very quickly. But they're nice and bright when they work.

Perhaps someone already did something before you purchased the car. All I really know is that non of my four diesels 123s are very bright at the full rheostat settings.

Both my 240s are about the same as far as the brightness of the instruments. I,ve gone in and replaced any burned out bulbs and both clusters are plenty bright for me. Maybe folks that drive in well lit cities would like more light on the cluster though.

My rheostat has had some issues as of late so I ended up jumping pins with a wire.

I would eventually like to restore its functionality, but since my max brightness is the level I like it at I see no reason to restore it right now. I know there is a DIY article on cleaning out the coil. Maybe I'll do it over the summer with the other mini projects I have planned.

Are there any recommendations of putting in a Red LED? some gauge clusters are backlit red because the human eye can transition from a red light to night Faster then from any other light source. I like the lights in my dash.. but they are just not bright enough that I can see all the way to the bottom to see the clock. the only saving grace with that is the SRS light that's right by it.

My DIY LEDs from radioshack are still running strong and super bright. My problem was more dirty optical prisms (tried cleaning the best I could) so the brighter the better. 3 super bright red radioshack LEDs stuffed into each side with a resistor in series woked fantastic, and came to a total of about $7. I'll be doing the same mod in my new w126 with blue LEDs to match the interior...will post pics whenever I get to it.

can you post instructions and a parts list? I need to fix my odometer (slipping gears), and would like to do the led mod too, Thanks.

I ran across that site when I was looking. It is a little misleading because it looks like the pictures they are showing are "back lit" clusters and the needles are either lit or have been painted with florescent paint.

There is a pic on the forum of what an older car looks like with LED's in it. The forum pic is a hell of a lot more realistic and gives you an idea of what you will be "seeing".

I think the superbright LED's site has a chart that shows the bulb crossovers and wattages. I was looking at it a couple weeks ago. I'm still on the fence about switching over.

I agree with post # 41. Resistor and how to wire would be a big help.
