Do I need to shorten my driveshaft?
I'm doing an engine swap, putting my 300sd engine into a 1989 420SEL. I've got the engine set in place, but have no play between the transmission yoke and the driveshaft. I don't recall how much play there was when I removed engines, but I think there should be some movement to slide driveshaft away from flex disc. Do I need to shorten my driveshaft slightly?

The drive shaft collapses in the middle, have you shifted it as far as it goes?
You would be much better off just finding an SD DS.

I need to take my guard off tomorrow and check the carrier. I believe it is collapsed all the way by the way it felt, but won't know for sure til tomorrow. How much play should there be- maybe an inch?
As far as finding a SD DS or any other diesel, I can't come close for price comparing the money in my project and buying another. My 84 SD will easily qualify as a worn out ,ugly car. After going through my engine and buying the low mileage 420 SEL,I'll still have only around 2 grand in it.It really hasn't been that bad for the swap, almost everything is a bolt in. The worst has been modifying the wiring to retain all functions as normal,as the 420 had a computer which controls more than I liked.Computer is now removed, but will still retain the ABS and airbags. |
