OM617 water pump retaining bolts
I have read it's not a bad idea to use new bolts when replacing the water pump.
Anyone know what size to shop for? For the '85 300d, if that matters. The pump bolts, not the bolts for the fan to the pump. Thanks

PM Greazzer he's just finished dissecting 5 of them.
If it's your DD I would pop one off, measure it, and slap it back in there before going the full disassembly

I don't think replacing the bolts is needed. clean them well, and of course if any are rusted, chunk them, but they are protected, and they do not need much torque to hold everything...

The thread alleged the heads can snap off when you retighten the old bolts.
If no one has had that problem, then that works for me too.

Use a Never-seeze type compound on the Threads when you assemble them.

Barring signs of abuse, why bother? Looks OK, tight enough and call it a day. Not highly stressed, yielded installation, highly critical or a lot of work to get at and replace. Examples of single use or prescribed inspection in the 61x world are head bolts, flywheel bolts and I think driveshaft bolts. So far, broken the rules on DS bolts, and IIRC, flywheel bolts measure OK.

Oh, duh-also run a tap through any threaded holes to clean them up. This will make a huge difference in bolt fitment. A small amount of corrosion can ruin your day, and taps are cheap individually at most places(usually under $20/tap)
