ARRRRRGH!!! why do people ask me if they don't wanna heed my advice?

lady I've known for years buys a 94 e300
she had a friend work on the car, and he screwed it up.
he was just changing the brakes... he separated the calipers... fluid everywhere, and can't make it stop.
I told her since the factory crush seals are broken, she needs either used pulls from the yard, or a PAIR of rebuilt calipers. only one is leaking, but a rebuilt will have a larger bore on one side, causing an imbalance in stopping...
the guy knows a shop that's "full of experience" and has never heard of matching calipers... I asked if they were familiar with 4 piston mercedes calipers?
whatever, she's driving the car to this shop and having them fix it their way... oh yeah, the cars brakes don't work well, and they are not picking up the car, they are making her drive the car to them...
that's not all with the car...
radiator hose has a hole in it...
radiator (expansion tank) cap is completely disintegrated...
overflow hose is dry rotted and toast.
secondary pump hole in the washer fluid tank has a stove bolt stuck in it...
etc...

People ask for advice and then don't listen so next time you see them you can rub it in their face No but seriously it is amazingly flustrating when people do this.

I hate that. But in the end, as helpplease stated, it works out for the better. You gave them the advice, it's their choice to make whatever they do. Even if you know it's stupid.

My new policy is to avoid giving advice on anything...........unless asked.

Recall all of the previous instances where you gave unsolicited advice..........now think as to whether the advice was ever utilized for benefit of the individual.

It never happens.

Providing advice is usually a 50-50 proposition, at best, unless the individual sincerely considers you the expert on the subject...........otherwise, your advice is just as valuable as any other advice. Are they really able to separate the wheat from the chaff?

The only problem is that her driving it there may constitute a danger to other innocent drivers or pedestrians on the way there...
and if what you say about the shop is true even after it is ' fixed' there may be big problems...

for others reading that missed part of what he said... the rule is ' you do the same thing to both sides of an axle... both fronts match with work and parts, both rears match with work and parts....

I've been a "car guy" and freelance mechanic for years (fixing other people's cars here and there for extra money) so I have a decent knowledge base. The one thing that gets me is my girlfriend's mother, who has absolutely zero experience or knowledge about anything mechanical. While that is okay (not all of us are mechanics), she constantly tells me that I am wrong, laughs at me for buying a 25 year old mercedes, while she cruises around in her now-broken Ford Windstar. I think the worst moment came when I was car shopping with my gf a couple summers ago. I had her looking at civics, corollas, nothing special but decent cars. She ended up getting an Eclipse (which is okay with me) paying wayyy too much money for a questionable service record. Luckily it has been decent, but only after replacing half of the suspension in the right front! Don't even get me started on the ripoffs at their "trusted repair shop". Love them, but not when it comes to cars . I feel your pain!

oh just wait...
actually, She called me to ask what to do... she knew I'm a mercedes fanatic... just knew I would know the right answer...
then did something else...
just blows my mind.
she looks at it like, if it's not right they will fix it again.
I look at it like I want it to trouble me the least possible, and waste as little of MY time as possible and be SAFE!!!!
like I said...
ARRRGGGHHHHHH!!@#!@#@#!

I hope someone has not said this yet; but, I think People ask for advice but take the advice that backs up what they wanted to do anway or advice that relieves them of responsibility/decision making/blame.
