I'm a bit anal about the mileage thing, not so much for the badges, but for maintenance aspect.

Ok, here's the update...

I followed the DieselGiant Pictorial and Writeup. Excellent thing to have and follow...Now for the trip meter still would stop at x.9. I kept watching an could not see what was going on. All the big and side gears were turning, butwiththe Speedo out of the cluster, I could here it ratcheting when I spun the brass gear by hand. When I turned the speedo upside down, it worked fine. I pressed in on the three return springs the press on the trip meter wheels, and it would work fine. I then saw what was ratcheting...then entire trip meter assembly. I almost made a secondary spring assembly that would give more pressure to keep the gears meshed, but I knew something was not right...out comes the speedo Jimmy brought me...wow it's reset arm was much harder to press than the one I was working on. A closer look revealed there is a spring that goes between the trip reset arm and the fram of the speedo assembly. I made a spring work from a defunct ball point pen, and not the trip meter does not skip a beat.

Sorry. no pics taken. I may take pics tomorrow...

Thanks!!! The spring was a different type than I have seen before. Is was tightly compressed in the center, and was stiff, unlike the typical ball point pen spring.

I did take some pics. Here is the steps on what I did...

1. Removed the cluster and speedometer like in DieselGiants wrtie up
2. Found the potmetal gear slipping, but when I slid gear on the shaft, the gear quit slipping. I also used an allen wrench instead of a drill bit to hold the odo number wheels.
3. Found that someone else had tried to fix the problem by scoring the shaft. I scored it some more, and used thick set super glue. As the glue set, spund the shaft fowards and backwards, just in case the glue got between the brass gear, housing and pot metal gear.
4. Cleaned the light prisms and painted the lighting area w/Testors gloss white. Mixed up some orange paint and painted the instrument needles.
5. Put it all back together and took a test spin on I-30 to Greenville. This was at 5:00 pm. Saturday afternoon.
6. Trip odo still stopping at xxx.9...
7. Got pulled over on the way back home. 80 in a 70. State trooper was in a good mood and just gave me a written warning.
8. Got home, repulled the cluster with lighting from a drop light.
9. Pulled speedo out yet again. This time watched everything about the trip odo. Tightening up the finger springs did nothing.
10. Pulled out the '85 speedo and noticed the spring that was missing on the current speedo.
11. Fashioned up the "MacGuyver" spring.
12. Tested it all by hand again.
13. Installed the cluster this morning...replaced seat belt warning light bulb, took it for another test spin, this time without State Trooper intervention...it worked!!!!!!

Now there is a new problem I'll make a new post for that one.

The spring in the forefront is the one that was missing from the trip odo reset arm.

The painted needles are not the proper orange, but will do until I get the proper paint.

I also was thinking of cleaning up my numbers, especialy the tenth of mile tripometer white band with black numerals. I was thinking of trying some rubbing alchohol on a Q-Tip on a small area. Has anyone attempted this?
