swapping lift pumps.

so my friend has a 79 300td that is leaking out of the lift pump. can i swap the lift pump from a 84 euro 300d? they look a bit different. also is ther a blown up diagram that shows what the inside looks like and whether or not there is an o ring that could be replaced for a temporary fix?

Is it the pump handle thats leaking? You can change those upgraded one for diesel fuel only.Old style is for WVO.

pump handle leaks when open but it also leaks where the primer pump goes into the lift pump body when the vehicle is running. seems to be starving the engine for fuel and my friends have more driving to do. trying to come up with a "saturday afternoon" temporary fix. i can swap out the pump from my 84 but not sure if it is compatible. is there an o ring that craetes the seal that could be swapped out?

Lift pump

Yes ..there is a metal washer...copper or aluminum....something that will crush for a seal...on the threaded portion of the hand pump...where it screws into the pump body...
Replace that with something close in size....
The Orings are inside the pump around the actuating shaft...those can be changed with a kit....but that is more involved.....all the guts can be replaced if you are doing a pump rebuild...

But if you just need a get-by fix....replace the leaking external metal washers....

The lift pump on a euro is different. The two fuel lines are outboard of the priming pump, On the US pump, they are inboard making replacing the priming pump easier. I dont think the lift pumps are interchangeable. But I've never tried it.

edit.. They both use the same priming pump.

If it is leaking between the handle (at the top) and the aluminum body of the pump the question is was the Handle pushed all the way down and rotated Clockwise to lock it in place. When the handle is screwed down you cannot pull it up and down. Screwing it down seals it.

If the Hand Primer handle is screwed/locked down and you are sure air is not getting into the system from another source the Hand Primer will need to be replaces.
