getting a windsheild from a boneyard

Theres a windsheild in a local boneyard from a 240D. I am tempted to pull it or have them pull it out for me. I dont want to break it and have to pay for it afterwards. How much should I spend for a used windsheild?

Let's see... Anyone can buy a brand new Pilkington windshield for a W123 for about $130 uninstalled if you're willing to drive to the closest warehouse and pick it up yourself. As far as I'm concerned, a used windshield that is essentially perfect should be no more than $65 if they pull it for me. If I were to pull it myself, I'd account for my time and effort, and would be willing to spend no more than $30 for it. Again, that's only if the windshield is nearly perfect. If it is rock blasted, delaminating, or has the slightest wiper scratches in the glass, it's worth nothing to me.

I'm particular. Can you tell?

Now, if that used windshield is a really nice genuine MB piece of glass, I might just pay a bit more for it if that were important to me. I have no issues with Pilkington quality, though, so any used glass would have to be perfect.

I concur. New windshields are so inexpensive, why not?

It's easy to remove, though. Just slice off the rubber to the inside of the trim on the outside of the windshield. Then a gentle push and she'll pop free.

Use a genuine MB seal, and you do know to install the trim first, right?

Jim

I agree even if the new one is not cheap... the chance of taking out AND installing an old one without breaking it is pretty low... they just get fragile sitting in the sun for decades...

At "my" junkyard winshield is $30, that comes to $15 on a half price day.
I was trying to remowe windshields on W126 before just to see how hard it is - very easy. Unfortunately I bent the chrome trim and destroyed the rubber seal at the same time. After that pushing the glass is piece of cake. Then I would have to get new seal and pay professional shop for the installation. No way I would do it myself

... I also vote U buy new !

Q - How many miles on the car the $30 windshield would be coming out of?

In short, It's just not worth is for a W123 font windshield. When both me and my Son purchased our 1980 models shown below, we paid ~$220 for new front windshields installed with new weather seals. It's worth it!

Rear windshields are a different story because they don't get broken or sand blasted as much... and thus I suspect would be much more expensive. IF you buy these salvage, you would want to look really close at the De-Fog elements and measure the electrical resistance across each element!
Regards,

Regards,
At around $360 for a back window without installation, you better believe that would be an ideal salvage yard item. Shockingly, a W123 rear window is pretty cheap compared to many cars! I have two other cars with rear windows that cost two and three times as much, and both of them need replacing!
