1978 300 td / No to low turbo (umff)

Looking at a 1987 300 TD: 108,000mi
original 14# head
starts OK down 1-2 glow plugs but cleans up quick, and re starts "GOOD"
when warm.
Vacuum seems to be good (shut down-door locks) all operate.

concern: sluggish, like low to no turbo pressure, Checked the air filter for overloading (this is a donated vehicle) looked OK not fresh but not in need
of a change. The thing will free rev to 5000 just fine, just not under a load.
The transmission feels fine, shifts like a MB, firm. Fuel pooling around all
injectors, and bubbles at the bottom sealing surface of the injectors. IP
looks to be dry.
I drive a 99 E300 606, at 177HP. Always heard that the 87 300td @143HP
was a real performer, especially in the "E" series. I have read recently in the forum that 0 to 60 should be had in around 9 1/2 to 10 sec. This one won"t set you back in your seat at all.

NICE car, What say you? (IP timing - bad fuel filter - turbo ALDA adj. -
valve adj. - turbo vacuum inop) ma by a bit of all of it.

thanks for thinking about it gflatt

check the turbo pressure tube to the alda, (and overboost protection switch) if the switch or hose is broken it could be your problem, change all your fuel filters if it hasnt been done in a while. take your air filter off and examine the turbine blades of the turbo for signs external wear. What is your fuel consumption?

no UMFF

CTHECOOL & VSTECH Thank you for chiming in, I agree, if I get it in my
garage and have a few hours to go through systems I'm sure it will be a keeper. Remember what I said, on the first line LOOKING! so for that reason
I don't have fuel economy numbers. In fact, the fuel may be quite old, seeing
that It's a donated vehicle and may have been sitting for a long time.
I can't officially turn wrenches on this one yet, just crawl all over and surmise, injection and combustion sound good through a stethoscope.
thanks for the communication, will inform. gflatt
