617.952 Engine Block, new liners, decked, bored etc...
While searching on CL last night, I came across this 617.952 engine block that the guy had new Liners installed, block surfaced and bored etc.....
One question I have is, wouldn`t you bore the Liners to fit the new Pistons? I need to call the guy and see what else is in the package. or is it just the block. I got all excited because it is all so clean and pretty. ![]() Mercedes 300D Block - $350 ( ![]() ![]() ![]() 300D (617.952) block has had the sleeves pressed in, bored, honed, and deck has been milled. $800.00 in machine work done. Was going to rebuild it, but lost interest. Charlie

My question would be how much was removed from the top of the Block.
Next would be what size are the Bores. And it is a normal practice to Bore to Piston Size. Way back in the 1970s I took a Gasoline Engine to be bored and wrote down what I wanted it bored to. The Machinist would not accept that. He wanted the Piston. However, they can bore anything to a spec that you give them if they want to.

$800 in machine work? That's worse than Dutch rates - how the u * k could you spend that much in machining on an OM617 block? What's that $100 per bore + $300 for the top? Eh?

If you don,t have the fitted pistons the block is almost worthless. May be they left enough meat in there to fit standard pistons. Other wise you have to measure the bores and find the right size pistons.

When I saw the Amount for the Job I was thinking that the shop that did the job did the whole thing from tanking the Block on to removing and installing the Liners.
If the Shop supplied the Liners they would likely charge more than the internet price which used to be $20 something to around $30 each. The Liners could account for at least $100 of the Cost. Shops sometimes simply quote the cost of the whole job and do not list the parts separately and if you looked at the Invoice you would think you were looking a only the Labor. Some Shops also do that so they don't have to deal with the Sales Tax. In CA Labor has no Sales Tax (so far).
