722.3 vs. 722.4

I read the OM606 in to a w123 chassis, and saw the tranny statement that the '85 w123 used the 722.4 tranny.

What is the difference between the 722.3 and the 722.4?

If I had to replace the tranny in my '82 (722.3) would the 722.4 be a drop in replacement?

Thanks!

You don't want to...

The 722.3 is a much more ROBUST transmission.

Thanks for the info!

I wonder why they went to a weaker model...

If I recall comparing the two side by side. I believe the latter is a lighter weight tranny. But I could be wrong.

.4 has a smaller case which also means smaller innards.

Where is this information (about the 722.4 being "weaker") coming from?

X2 on the question. Would like to know a bit more definitively that smaller in this case directly relates to weaker. [especially since I have said 722.4xx in the '85 wagon.....
There is also the difference of the tach pickup on the bell housing and a different torque converter. [different stall speed?]
