well if the intake on a w123 is anything like it is on the w115, then you have to remove both the intake and the exhaust just to remove the intake, and in that case you might as well do the gasket on both.

course while you're at it you might want to get out a die grinder and port match the exhaust manifold to the gasket

Exhibit C tells the story. How many miles are on that engine?

Is this a difficult job on the MB? Assuming the gasket cannot be re-used like on the TDI?

Thanks,

AJ
I just finished this job this past weekend. I saw all the crap in the EGR hole and also wanted to remove the turbo to replace all the oil seals and oring at the pan. Its not too hard but is a pain! you need to remove the DP and the U bolt by the trans. there is a bolt under the turbo that is a pain to access (see pic with the red arrow below). I pulled the exhaust and turbo as one piece. I used brake cleaner and chizzled as much as I could get at. Mine was really nasty. The holes in the head were really ugly too but I just left them alone. Maybe someday Ill pull them off again and see about steam cleaning or bath the intake in some super cleaner.

You will need a new intake gasket (17 or so) from phil. I also got the turbo install kit which had the intake gasket and a bunch of other gaskets.

Here are a few pics I took. I did not take any of the clean(er) parts and re assembly. I got busy and forgot...

Here is that bolt under the turbo that is pretty hard to get at.

Yep... Thats it!

I thought it was pretty easy compared to the TDI.

But, I worked on turbo prop aircraft for 10 years as a mechanic. Doing stuff like this is pretty simple after working on aircraft.

Anyone with a good decent tool box, a good back and common sense can accomplish this task with relative ease.

In my garage, there is an intake manifold soaking in a five-gallon bucket of diesel as I write this...

At the risk of a mega-repost flamefest, for laughs I will submit this "redneck" TDI cleaning method...

Bio Diesel for cleaning

I remember reading a post where the member used bio diesel for soaking and cleaning an intake -bio diesel is a powerful solvent as any one who has cleaned with it will attest. I would plug up the openings and fill with bio and let it sit overnight -you will be shocked when you see how clean it is in the morning -

Right ON... B99 in a rubbermaid bin for only 5 hours and it all came off.

I need to pull it again though. I have an oil leak under the turbo. It is annoying when you have a leak free engine and a spotless engine bay. I think it is the drain tube problem.

On another note. B99 is only $2.58 locally. #2 is anywhere from $2.79 to $2.95.

I hear you.... As soon as "that batch" is gone, it WILL go up.

The B20 at the same place is the same price as #2.

Here is a photo after my feeble to polish the valve cover (after a valve adj.). I was still troubleshooting the locks and A/C leaks. So, I had screws in the vacuum lines and hose clamps missing off of things etc... I can't find many pics...

This is like one of those kids books! HighLights? What is wrong in this picture?

Coolant Reservoir empty, wrong type of battery, cheap horrible fuel filter, hose clamp missing on the PCV line, Screw plugging a vacuum line, no cigar hose (just a piece of hose).....
