No. The later filter housings had a different inlet position that will occupy the battery space and the W116 does not have an oil drain tube for the separator.

Erm...both '79 and '80 SDs are W116s, The engines should swap with no issues.

though the 80 may have the later filter housing, it in no way has a different inlet position. the only visible difference is the connection on the top of the filter cover to the valve cover. All the parts in these cars are in the same location, just some parts are different. The battery is most certainly not in a different spot.

Still need to change or modify the upper oil pan to fit a drain tube anyways.
