Fan Clutch Play 1/8 Inch

Was told today that I'll be needing a new fan clutch. Didn't act as though it was urgent, but something I wouldn't want to put off for too long.

When I looked at it and tried to wiggle the blade, there's about 1/8 of an inch of play (i.e. I can move the blade forward and backward about 1/8 of an inch).

I have no experience with this sort of thing. What does this degree of play suggest as to how critical it is for me to replace the clutch? What bad things can happen if I let it go for a while?

FWIW, the car has about 210,000 miles on it and I'm fairly certain it's the original fan clutch.

Thanks!

One of mine had this much play, I replaced it as soon as I noticed.

I don't know how long it would have lasted, just that it would have cost a lot more time and money if it didn't.

Electric fans are a waste of energy and more likely to fail when you need it the most. The research is out there.

I was always told the way to check the clutch was to start the engine and then turn it off and see if the blades continue to turn.
