Just picked up a 240D and its running kind of warm?
I just picked an '82 240D, have receipts for new water pump 5 months ago. Driving the car I notice it runs at just above 100* Celsius (the tick mark in between 80 and 120). That is a bit higher than my last 240. The temp remains constant at that level. Is it something to be concerned about?

Yes, you need a new thermostat and/or to clean the radiator. It should stay around the 80*c mark.

You might want to really clean the cooling core of the block if it continues...
I have voiced my concerns over this before.... in the old days a rebuild on a block involved taking everything off the block and VATTING it... actually boiling it out with some really strong stuff... This cleaned up the primary problem area... where the speed of flow slows down at the back of the block and allows the build up of various things in the lower rear part of the water jacket. You might could flush with a 90 degree nozzle placed into the core plugs.. ( MB does not call them freeze plugs )... the use of a vacuum process would be necessary too in my opinion due to the limited size of the drain holes.. This is one drawback of having so many things replaceable on the engine and it being such a long lasting engine in the first place. |

Grab a non-contact thermometer and compare its readings to what your temp gauge says. My 240D runs way hot if you go by the gauge, but the radiator top tank temperature runs around 160.

Use the thermometer to measure temperatures on the cylinder head, not the radiator.

I flushed the system earlier today and it runs a bit cooler (just under 100c), going to replace the thermostat this weekend and hopefully it will run even cooler!
Thanks for all of your help everybody, much appreciated! |

I think thermostats have to be replaced every few years. The previous comments were very good. You may find that you will have corrosion on your aluminum thermostat housing esp in the necks because of dissimilar metal galvanic interaction. If the necks are badly corroded, your hose might leak. The neck may need an epoxy or JB weld repair. Consider replacing the short hose section while you are in there. ALso consider a good engine flush and a full drain including the side plug in the block with a cleaner and distilled water. I was told by a MB mechanic to use distilled water and MB coolant instead of zerex/prestone etc. He said MB antifreeze protects the plastic radiators better than conventional antifreeze. For what it is worth.... The distilled water will not have the ions which increase galvanic corrosion.

My 300D sits pretty much half way between the 80* and 100* mark...although, my rad leaks a touch right now.

So I've flushed the system from the radiator plug, bleed the lines from the block to heater, and replaced the thermostat. It is running much cooler now, but at a stop it is still heating back up, the aux fan is not coming on. Does anyone know of any links to sites that explain how to fix that?
Thanks |

Mine used to stay at or near 80 and now goes near to 100 on hot days/highway or uphill, coming back down if I freak and put the heat on to cool it or simply decrease the stress. It's definitely running hotter than it used to overall. Shall I change out the thermostat? Or flush and fill with MB-recommended fluid. Haven't attended to thermostat in the time I've owned the car. Is it warning me?
