I heard this diagnosis and cringed.

I like the Tappet Bros. for entertainment purposes while driving on Sat. mornings but they often go for the worst case scenario for that very reason, I think. Entertainment!

My gut when I heard this guy's description..."poor dude put Heet in there."

Whunter, I hope you steered him down the happy road. Drain, sreen, filters, purge, filters again, haul a$$. Not too happy, I guess; but a whole lot better than a cracked head, block, or otherwise bad cylinder.

It was an easy fix.
Educated him on adding kerosene to prevent jelling.

He still thinks the Tappet Bros are great entertainment.

We have Skeeters Garage here in Houston on 740am ,comes on at 12 pm on Saturdays .Very knowledgable man and knows his stuff from recall memory ,amazing. If he doesnt have it zeroed in by the end of the callers description he has the caller email him at his garage with more info then gets the customer a more precise answer via the internet. He is a legend out here.Being a semi retired owner gives him more time to do the radio spot ,his son is taking over the keys to the shop.
I like Click and Clack ,not sure of were to find them anymore here on the Houston air waves though.

Hey guys you can download Click & Clack from iTunes podcasts(NPR:Car Talk). Also if you can get a hold of a leak down tester or compression checker for diesel then you'll know exactly what the problem is. I agree with the other guys. These heads are extremely hard to warp and blow gaskets. I once tore the fan belt on my 1979 240D and drove about fifteen minutes with the temp gauge about a millimeter from the red 125 C mark and nothing happened. The engine ran great for years after that! Overbuilt, underpowered is the 240D's invincible anvil like 616 oil burner!

I would have guessed a vacuum pump diaphragm leak. Had that happen once and at idle it sucks gobs of engine oil into the intake on a 220D and a 240D, because those older beasts actually have an idle speed air throttling plate that causes vacuum in the intake manifold, where the vacuum pump discharges. Not so sure about a 300D. Once off idle, the effect is mitigated by the lack of vacuum as the little throttle plate moves out of the way.

Sorry I missed the show. I get a good laugh listening to them.

I enjoy the show. Great entertainment, plus occasionally I learn something.

Worst advice I ever heard them give was when they told a guy with a Porsche 912 that he needed a water pump....

That'll happen on the early vacuum pumps which discharge into the air cleaner but it won't happen on the later vacuum pumps. Not sure when the change was made. My 77 has the early, my 85 the late and my 79SD the late too.

I like them- I've listened to them since i was a little tike- probably a good part of the reason that I work on my own cars.

cant blame them for not knowing diesel's- they aren't diesel techs. but I bet they get awashed with email's from this episode from mercedes lovers everywhere- that is what happens if you do something wrong....

but if you ever tried to call them, you would realize they screen their calls- they know who's calling and what the problem is before the show even starts. they take your info and then if you're good enough, they'll call you back on show day.
