Recently, I purchased a "W123 5-speed transmission" that had just been rebuilt from a guy in California. It didn't look like the single case 717.x transmissions that I've seen pictures of, but it looked just like the pictures of the 5-speed transmission in my Haynes repair manual. I probably got ripped off. I paid $750 for it and about 500 miles after I put it in, I noticed a puddle of transmission oil under my car. It turns out, the shop that rebuilt it reused the one time use nuts that go on the main shaft without putting locktight or anything on them, and, as a result, the nut on the rear end of the shaft unscrewed itsself and ground against the rear cover until it busted through.
Now I'm trying to find a new rear cover, or get it welded. If I can find a new rear cover, it would probably be worth it to me to buy it. However, the model number on my transmission appears to have been ground off. None of the part nubers on anything match up with with their correct part in the American or European parts catalogues, with the exception of the bell housing which matches up with a W115 bellhousing. All of the other part numbers start with 117, (except for the bell housing which starts with 115) indicating that the transission was off a 117 chasis. Problem is, there's no such thing as a 117 chasis. I'm thinking that the transmission is probably off of something with an M117 engine, possibly a W116 chasis. Can anyone confirm or deny this hypothesis? If I can figure out what the transmission came out of, I could be able to find the part I need.
