ELR not working, 87 300D

Hey Guys,

So I have recently started having a somewhat shaky idle..smooth, but pretty lopey throughout the whole car. After thinking about it a while, I decided to check on my ELR because I remembered how much worse the idle got when I had it disconnected a while back to up my idle rpm.
Anyway, it seems the system is not working- when I take the two-prong connector off the IP, nothing changes. No effect with the ELR wheel either.

I did a pretty thorough electrical spray cleaning, but still nothing. It seems to be the worst when the engine is warm. It really isn't that bad, but I like to be on top of things, so...

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any quick fixes? I have heard of people saying that it can go bad, but never heard of anyone dealing with it. I might consider trying to buy a new wire connector to the IP since mine is as stiff as a board from being old. I took a glance at the wiring diagram in the FSM, but it looks like a mess and I wouldn't know where to even start past the IP, selector knob, and OVP (which is somewhat new, and the fuse is fine)

OVP Relay, ELR control box, actuator on pump are all possibilities. I had a bad OVP relay AND a bad ELR box. You can test the pump actuator by giving it 12 volts BRIEFLY. The idle should increase as soon as you put voltage to it.

Dan

I'm going to try to PM you the idle test procedure.

Er, make that I'll need your email, it's 7 pages in pdf.

Thanks guys.

Just to clear up any possible questions, I am 90% sure it is the ELR that is making my idle like a massage chair (although a subtle one).

I have new motor mounts, new injectors, new delivery valve seals..and everything was fine up until about a week or two ago. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the timing is slightly off after swapping the injectors, but..I am still getting good mpg and no smoke, so I doubt it is off enough to cause a shake.

It's possible that the ELR is working when cold, and then not working when warm, but I'll need to check on this again to make sure it wasn't my imagination.

Sean, got your email- thanks!

After skimming through the procedures, I suspect that either the ELR actuator in the IP is either bad, or not getting battery power. I'll keep the thread posted with what I find.

Did you R/O with the actuator test-- apply batt voltage directly to the actuator (for a second or three, no longer) and see the idle go up?
