This problem can also be caused by the shifter bushings. Seen it before.
Put the shift lever in N and move it back and forth. Does it have a lot of play before you can feel it actually doing anything? Shifter bushings are a lot cheaper. Paul

Thanks for replying guys.
Can the bushings be replaced from inside the car? How do you get to them? The shifter feels pretty tight. If there is an easy way to peek at them, I would like to know.

Under car at each end of the rod that runs from the shifter anc the trans.
