I know the annular one I had that seperated used grease. If anything grease is less likely to leak?
I'm not all that excited with the grease approach as well. The centrifugal force will tend to sling the grease off the balls and onto the inner walls of the boot. It's impossible to fully pack the boot with grease to the point where there is no air surrounding the balls.
The original design used oil...........probably for a good reason.
