If money can fix it, it isn`t a problem .
When I did mine, I had a picture in my mind what I wanted the end result to look like. we just went for it. It all depends what you want, and are willing to pay for. Charlie

Why would you need a JY turbo? Use the existing turbo.

Not all junk in a junk yard is junk. I pulled an eng. out of an 85 cali last yr, complete, firewall forward. the Turbo must have been replaced not too long before I pulled it.
True, most Turbos I have seen usually have a lot of play in the bearings. The PNP`s around here charge $60.00 for a used one. Manifolds are $40.00 for the ones I have pulled off a few 78 Sd`s. w/o the EGR. those are getting few and far between. Oh yeah, have to remember there is the CORE charge and ENVIRONMENTAL fee and TAX. Charlie

I'm not sure how the 1985 air cleaner assembly works, but the turbo inlet is in a different location (farther forward) on turbos with ARV... so the older air cleaners MUST match the turbo, or they will NOT align. Don't ask how I know... The wart on the front of the turbo, with the vacuum port, is the ARV: |

confusion: the DIY says the oil inlet / oultet won't line up... after attempting to re-orient the housings. How can you keep the turbo w/o fab? |

Another advantage of the CA setup: I've heard (no personal experience) that to remove the Federal manifolds (for any reason) you have to take the manifold and the turbo off as a "rather heavy" unit. With the CA manifolds, the turbo can come off separately. Thus, if you need to pull the turbo, you don't need to pull the manifolds. It's a simpler operation with fewer things to break.

The DIY is wrong, the housings only need to be reclocked to work on a federal setup.

Correct. I don't have any good photos of a 1985 CA air cleaner, with the remote canister (similar to all W124 diesel air cleaners).
The point was the show that the turbos with ARV stick forward an extra couple of inches, so if you swap in a different turbo, you need to make sure that whatever air cleaner is used, will attach properly. With the round metal air cleaners, the air cleaner MUST match the turbo. I do not know if the 1985 CA setup is flexible enough to accomdate both turbo types or not (I think it may, but I'm not certain). |

Here are some pictures of my '85 CA model 300D-T. If you want to use the CA air cleaner with a Federal IM, you would need to fabricate a longer air pipe from the air cleaner to the turbo intake. Probably not a major job. As previously stated, it is supposed to be easy to take the turbo apart and rotate the casings until the exhaust intake and blower outlets line up with the manifolds. I would recommend having a junk Federal car on hand because you will inevitably discover that you need more parts than you originally thought (Murphy's Law applies here).
BTW, this car is for sale. Jeremy
