I use one of those bump starter things, have yet for the engine to start, you're just barley turning the engine, but if it makes you feel better, press on the shut off lever, or pull vac on the line.

I just did my 85 300SD last week. I could not believe it was the same car after I was done . I use the info off dieselgiant.com . I think starting it to move it would not work very well . That just my thought . Good luck

I had one start on me by just bumping it. What a mess. After that I always used the PS nut since it was too big a PITA to turn it by the crank bolt. I've suggested using the PS nut many years ago in one of these kind of threads.

![]() PS pump works juuust fine. there was a thread couple weeks ago where a guy had the bolts brake off for the crank pully. one thing brought up was if the belts are too tight it can put too much strain on the bolts, Alternator bearings, PS shaft etc... Charlie

valve is spinning
Gentlemen,
My spring valve adjustment is not going so well. I have 3 valves that "spin" while I turn the jamnut. I have gone through the website and this problem is not uncommon. It was suggested to jam a flat screwdriver somewhere, I am not sure where, to prevent this from happening. There is also a reference to a "3rd" wrench that attaches to the valve and prevents this spinning. I don't want to use blunt instruments that might leave a nick on the valve stem or compromise the overall operation. I did the first 7 valves very easily. What do I do now? Joe Marroso |

I find that extremely hard to believe, on a cold engine. When I adjusted the valves with the bump starter, I was turning the engine maybe 1/8 of a revolution at a time and I can't see how the engine can start. How many revolutions were you spinning the motor?
