92 300D 2.5 Turbo -- Give me the scoop, please.

Greetings all --- I'm looking at a 92 300D 2.5 Turbo...I don't really know why, but it appears to be a good deal, and I have an addiction problem with these diesels...and have also heard the fuel mileage can be really good –

The car has a clean car fax, 220,000 miles and appears to be in very good condition, white with tan interior - asking price is $4,500...some, but limited service history is available.

I'm old school and only have experience with the 123 and 126 chassis 617's.

Can you, as loyal and knowledgeable members of this prestigious forum PLEASE give me the scoop on the 124 / 602 model? Can I expect the same level of long life and service as I've grown to love, expect and appreciate with the 617's??? Is there anything in particular I should look at or check…hoping to gather the basics before making a 280 mile trip to check it out.

Many thanks in advance for your help and information...

Try to shave $500.00 off asking, If it starts good without excessive smoke of any color, shifts good, sounds good, drives good, I think you're good to go. Be certain to check fluid levels before even test driving. This gives you a chance to peer under the hood for a few minutes.

I just bought a 1993 300D. I think I am really gong to like this car! Today I changed the transmission fluid/filter and did an oil change. You'll have fun with one too I bet. Go for it if it is in decent shape.

Good cars. Not as fast as the earlier 603 powered W124 300D's but still plenty quick for a diesel.

If running right will get you 30 mpg or better on the highway. But be aware, the 602 engines have the same potential problems as their big brother 603. Overheating can cause head gasket problems so do the same kind of checks for oil in coolant and so on.

If it's in good condition with no big suspension/drivetrain issues then that's not a terrible price.

Glow plugs are thinner and deeper than on the 603, very bad if you break one off in the head. If you ever have to replace the gp's be sure to put some antisieze on the threads. The fuel economy is great though, and that price sounds pretty fair if the interior is in good shape.
If the rear suspension is in need of repair the car will feel squirrelly, and need some $$ thrown at it but if in good condition the car should handle really nice

Are you confusing the 602 with the 606? I don't believe they are a problem in the 602.

Hi, heck I did I suppose get confused. sorry if I did
Here's what I know: world pac specifies different parts for the glow plugs, left plug is 92 250D gp, center is 87 300D gp, right is the OM606 which you do not have (and you can sleep well knowing you won't have problems)

Warren Buffett's Berkshire-Hathaway, Inc......$19.00 a share in 1965 to $151,650.00. What a ride!

HEY SRJ!! I pointed the facts out to you in a post a month or two back but you continue to list an OLD price for Berkshire Hathaway class A stock, its now in the low 90's, not $151K.
sorry to post this openly but Skid Row Joe is not taking Emails or PM's

I suspect the glow plug for the 602 is rated for after glow as the 124 got after glow from 1990 forward.

Good luck trying to convince SRJ. He still thinks he owns a TD even though many on this forum have told him otherwise. The last year MB imported a TD was 1987. He believes that TD means turbo diesel, when it actually means touring diesel. I'm pretty sure Jimmy has shined the TD light on him.

Great vehicle. I've got a 92 300D OM602.962. Changed 1 glow plug. Did a write up on it.
