the new belt seemed almost exact to the old, barring slight stretching from the dry-rotted old one.

I must have over-tightened if you recommend 1/2 inch play??

FYI, the adjuster bolt is a long small bolt with eye loop on one end. Pretty simple, course now mine is two pieces

The adjuster is not essential. You can use a pry bar and tighten the large bolts.

I have 1/2 inch "play" in mine, no issues.

Not sure why the new belt goes all the way down, but as long as it works. Usually tho, it (belt) is well within the adjustment, but I recall one of those to be pretty tight.

Thanks for the encouragement. I will leave about 1/2 if and when I find the replacement adjustment bolt, which will not be all the way down past breaking. Close to that tight without right it now.
