transmission swap ::: 722.308?
hey all-
i've got a stellar transmission in an '80's euro gasser sedan that's a "722.308"... i'm "planning for the long-term," and wonder if anybody knows if it will go into my '85 wagon (that's got the (stock) 722.315 in it). can't find any useful reference to a .308 on the forum or online. anybody know the difference between these two trannies? bolt pattern? extension housing?

Nope- its just the valve body and possibly the gearing that differs. All the 722.3xx are physically the same.

Yup, I also got a great one from a euro 84 280ce coupe, i have heard it would last fine behind a turbo diesel.

really...
i made a call yesterday to Portland's much revered Mercedes-specialized "Automatic Transmission Service" yesterday, and they told me that "722.3 series doesn't mean anything. There are lots of variations and they're not necessarily compatible. They could have different extension housings, bolt patterns, etc."
I asked them how much they'd charge to take the transmission out of my sedan and put it in my wagon, and they quoted $900 "if they don't run into any trouble." Thoughts? Assuming they're full of crap: If, as RS899 says, the valve body and gearings are at least different...what kinds of problems would that create for me?

You can dig around in here for the gear ratios for the W123 gasser:
http://mb.auto.pl/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,40/ Not sure if they list the turbodiesel ratios there, perhaps not but someone here may be able to come up with it. One of the MB transmission manuals I have (courtesy RLeo) seems to indicate that the gearing is the same in all of the series, however the valve bodies and governors differ You MAY be able to swap your diesel valve body and governor in- if the intermediate plate that the VB mounts to is the same. You can also swap modulators. I am sure that others have done what you are proposing. Using a gasser transmission won't be optimal, but it will get you down the road. Oh, I just noticed you have an '85 wagon- that's going to have a different vacuum system (and the transmission is a 722.4xx, isn't it?)- don't know much about that or how it will play with the gasser transmission.
