Tiny bulb, headlight on/off switch on 123/126

Small problem but big mystery. I pulled the headlight on/off switch out of both my 123 and my 126 and have replaced the tiny light bulb in both. Neither one works, nor have I ever seen them work. When is this light supposed to come on? Is there a fix?

Thanks.

the light is suppose to come on when you pull the knob out to engage the fog lights... other than that being cause of 'human error', im not sure what else would keep them from illuminating... mine dosn't work but it dosnt really bother me

It comes on when you turn on the rear fog light by pulling the switch out two clicks.

Since US versions are not equipped with rear fog lights, one should expect the indicator light in the switch to never illuminate.

It's been many years since I installed the little lamp, but I seem to remember jumping 2 terminals of the switch and nothing more. Mine illuminates as it should - on the last detent. You just a wiring diagram of the switch. The switch is the same - Euro or US

Perhaps on earlier cars, but 2nd Gen W126s lack both the light socket and contact inside the switch
