85 300D Half Shafts

Hi,

I have review the site on this problem. My 300D left half shaft is clicking. I have been told they should be replaced in pairs.

I just got a MB quote... hold on to your socks.. 1390 ouchhhh.

I saw some on the forum talking about another more reason place that sold rebuilt shafts about 600 for the pair.

I would appreciate any points to these rebuilt parts and experiences in replacing them. I am planning to do the work myself assuming I can get them off without special tools.

Help,

Morph

Relatively Easy to Do Axles

I went through this recently with my '82 300D. It was rather heartbreaking to have to pay the price to do this job right - I did both axles even though only one had leaked and gone bad. It was the right choice to do both, because the second axle was nearly gone also.

Performance Products is where I got NEW axle shafts for about $600 for the pair. I'd say the job is a very reasonable do-it-yourself job if you have average tools and some jacks/jackstands. Take a look at the thread below, and then follow the further links contained in that discussion. Good info with pictures.

Ken,

I bought two rebuilt half-shafts for my 300CD right here at FastLane for about $200 each (had to send'm my old ones). Its been about six months and I have no complaint so far.

I think they are even available at your local auto parts store. Are here in Columbia, SC. Priced a little lower than FastLane but I felt more comfortable buying here and prefer to support the site.

What brand does Fastlane sell? I like the ones the Ken found and it seem GKN is very reputable.

The other replacements I can find are ARNLEY # 106-0755 at 98.95 each with 59.68 core.

Morph,

I can't find paperwork on them so you'd have to contact FastLane. I did call the factory where they were manufactured before installing just to talk about quality and ended that call somewhat re-assured. I don't know how to rank stuff like this and simply hope that a place like FastLane will do their homework more stringently than the local all purpose auto parts store.

In retrospect, I wish I had purchased the new ones. much more money but then I'd have little concern over quality and durability. seems its often the case that when I compromise, I regret it later. On the other hand, I have never regretted (later) buying the "best" and paying more. One day I'll learn.
