Maybe 100 pounds. I find it hard to believe you can't find one in your area. They were the standard automatic in just about every MB in the late 70s.

And now....

We move to the R&R of the transmission. I found a replacement transmission, hope it will work!

I'm sure the transmissions weighs well over 100 lbs. Those darn things are heavy.

Yeah I just pulled mine off the engine and expected to just muscle it up in the air to move it around the garage. Didn't happen like that....

Ahhhhh...

Just got a replacement used transmission. I feel a little lucky. I pulled the pan off to check for debris....pretty clean. Came off a 240D whose driver didn't think to check the engine oil.....
So now this moves into the "1981 240D remove and replace auto transmission" thread. Does such an animal exist here? I would like to know any tips or trick on this one. I am sure the torque converter position is probably important, so I would like to know if anyone on the forum has gone down this road.

Here's to laying on the ground and wrestling with transmissions!

Go the transmission installed, replaced the carrier bearing and support...and had to charge the battery. Too much time with the trunk open, I guess!
Now that there is a charge on the battery, the car won't start. I do not know if it is the neutral safety switch assembly, or the wire near the front of the transmission that I didn't see before I started to drop the transmission. It got pulled down a couple of inches before I saw it.
There isn't any power going to the solenoid or starter when the key is turned to the "start" position.
I have put 2 quarts of ATF in the transmission, but the level is over an inch above the "full" mark. Can I continue to add, or do I need to start the car first?
Been waiting too long to drive my baby.

Any ideas out there?

put the car in N and start the car. If it starts then it has a bad NSS.

Start the car and then add the rest of the fluid.

Starts in no position. Kind of the opposite of what I started with, engine ran, but car wouldn't move in any position.

Starter wasn't disconnected; started just fine before I removed the transmission.

Ah. Filled transmission. Drove down the road. Shift points too high! I got her into 3rd gear, but that wasn't until nearly 40 MPH! I'm not going to try to get it up to 55 like this. My old transmission had low shift points. This one changes gears hard, and downshifts hard. What do I adjust to correct this?

Got to drive her. Getting much happier now.
