Leaking Filter Housing at block.
I have a 95 E300D. I have a oil leak coming from where the oil filter housing bolts to the block. Has anyone replaced this gasket? If so how do you gedt to it? I got a quote of over $400.00 just for the gasket. The leak is getting worse and need to try something soon.

Well I tighened the bolts on the filter housing. two of the bottom ones were loose. I also resealed the oil pressure sending unit. A good drive today will see if it worked.

Hey Longshore1,
I got the same problem. I bought the gasket at the MB dealership, less than $5 -- the $395 is for labor. I am not familiar with the E300D, but for my situation it appears I need to unbolt the engine at the mounts, suspend it with a hoist so I can shift the engine to the passenger side to get enough clearance to remove the housing bolts. I figure while I am this far along I will replace the oil cooler hoses. If anybody has done this procedure, then there would be two of us that are grateful.

Aerokroil
'Hose down ALL the oil cooler line connections multiple times with AeroKroil...
Multiple days before you try to remove. AND make sure you use the proper Metric "BackStop" wrench on the Oil Filter/ Cooler Fittings,so that you don't screw up the Aluminum threads. Over time the Aluminum / Steel interface tries to solidify courtesy Galvanic Corrosion. AND if you run luckless and "Gall" the Cooler or Oil Filter bracket threads ,They are replaceable with "Threaded Nipples" available at minimum cost from the dealer.(You would have to Drill and Tap out the old fittings as per FSM) [Did I suggest coating all the threads with Anti-Seize before reassembly?] http://www.kanolabs.com/

I just ordered the gasket from phil on this website, it was $4.00. To get to the gasket I need to take off the intake manifold and then remove the starter. I also have a few custom allen key sockets that I had to cut down so they all fit in the spaces. Once I get I part I will get started. hopefully only a few hours of labor. I will clean out the intake manifold while its off.

Well After 3.5 hours of labor and lots of cleaning up oily parts I replaced the gasket and so far seems to be leak free. The old gasket was very brittle. not a bad job for a few hours and a $5.00 gasket.
