Turbo connecting hose
A couple days ago my turbo got considerably more noisy with a more pronounced high pitched whine. I looked at it and the connecting hose was completely severed. The connecting hose that goes from the top of the turbo to the boost pressure control valve is what I'm talking about. Does that mean I wasn't getting any control of my boost pressure?
Can someone explain what happens in the turbo system when that hose is severed? I understand the basic function of a turbocharger, but was wondering what the consequences of that severed hose would be.

I believe that's your wastegate hose. Not really sure, but I assume it means your wastegate won't open with the hose severed.

The turbo is, essentially, uncontrolled and is permitted to build pressure that is in excess of 25 psi under heavy load. The danger is a failed head gasket or excessive combustion temperatures...........neither of which is a good thing.

All of which shoud be substantially alleviated by a properly functioning overboost protection system.

That is not a favorable condition. The overboost protection is binary, the wastegate function is a gradient.
alleviated, ...maybe. More like 'accounted for'. The overboost is a safety net, not an auxiliary pair of trapeze. Last edited by jt20; 06-05-2009 at 12:39 AM. Reason: auxillary tpyo |
