Return lines are a snap, just install new ones how the old come off.
Ball joints require removal of the steering knuckle and piles of other parts, at that point you may as well rebuild the rest of the front end including swapping brake rotors.

It may or may not be the Ball Joints worn. The Upper and Lower Control Arms are are mounted with Rubber Bushings that over time get stiff and rot out (this happend on my 84 300D).
Go to the top of the page and put the pointer on the Resourses button and click on DIY Links to see how that job is done. For later referance there is at least 3 threads on cheaper alternate sources of the Fuel Return Hose.

If it's the lower ball joint, take it to an experienced suspension mechanic, they will be able to swap it out on the car. At least I was able to do so.

just did the return lines myself today. got that kit from giant, lined them up based on their length from front of the engine to the back. pulled straight out on the old ones and they all popped off and pushed on the new ones. the last little guy is a pain but comes out eventually.
