83 240d temp sensor plug question

My plug is loose and giving false hot temp readings. Can I stick some fine wire in the plug to tighten it up or is there another recommended proceedure?

I had a problem like that a few years ago. The terminal and the little plastic housing were available at the dealer for cheap.

As I recall though, when the connection is open, the indicated temp is zero, so, if you are getting high temp readings, you may have some other problem.

In my case. the sensor had worked slightly loose, allowing a trace of coolant to escape, which corroded the terminal.

So you are calling the terminal the part that screws into the block?

The plastic plug end of the wire can be taken apart. Then the connector itself can probably be pinched down again to make the fit tight.

No, by terminal, I meant the female connector on the end of the wire. The dealer had the terminal in stock, as well as the little plastic housing that clamps around it. I had to solder the new terminal on the end of the wire. Actually, it is a crimp terminal, however, bacause of the existing corrosion, I soldered it on.

That would probably work, although it may crack when you take it apart.

Also, you might find a suitable replacement terminal at a good hardware store.
