I hope someone has not said this yet; but, I think People ask for advice but take the advice that backs up what they wanted to do anway or advice that relieves them of responsibility/decision making/blame.

Somehow or other you did not say what she wanted to hear. I have no particular biases yet she is female. Slightly different logic seems to apply ocasionally.
 Remember we love them because they are different. Now if your wife had told her it would have been a slam dunk. Probably just in over your head like the majority of us.  Your frustration is showing.... You also may not be alone.
