Brake Break-in Period?
Had the front brakes done on the 92 300D. Balo rotors, Pagid pads. On hard braking, does not seem to be as smooth as it should. Pulsating would be too strong a word...but a very mild version of that is how it feels.
My tech tells me to give them 50 miles or so to "settle in." Is that right? Do pad and rotor somehow need to "adjust" to each other in order for braking to be perfectly smooth? Or does it sound like something's wrong. I know rotors can be bad out of the box.... Thanks!

New rotors have a coating on them that should be cleaned off. Sometimes a residue can be left over that can cause glazing and you could end up with squealing brakes for a while. If only the pads are new, it takes a little bit for the pad to conform to the rotor completely.
That being said, I've never experienced a strange vibration in new pads or rotors unless something was wrong. I imagine if you have ceramic pads they could cause a vibration on a grooved rotor though.

I did a lot of brake jobs back when I was wrenching for money, and most of them worked just fine upon assembly. Once in a while, however, it would take a little while for the pads and rotors to wear in to each other and make full contact across the surface of the pads. Give it 50 or a hundred miles of city driving and if it's still not how you like it, take it back for further investigation.

The normal pads don't take long to break in, maybe 10 miles and a few good stops. The PBR Ceramics take longer. Mine took about 100 miles of driving to get up to "max" braking power, and now they are awesome.
