Might this be a California car with a trap catalyst? That reduces mileage as well as performance.

I typed before I thought, This car was purchased in Jacksonville Florida brand new.

One way to tell if its a Cali car is to look at the air filter is it a normal one or is it huge and tall? huge and tall=cali. Or look underneath the turbo and look for a huge brown canister looking thing........that is the dreaded Trap Ox......Might just need a good tuneup both regular and Itailian

I was being silly.

People on eBay always throw out ridiculous numbers for fuel economy.

You probably saw mine at the GTG...it is a cali model. Turbo is up higher and the air cleaner is up front.

Congrats on purchasing a nice MB. Your 1985 model should have the 2.88 rear axle ratio, which helps make it among the most economical w123's as far as fuel economy. With everything functioning properly, 28 hwy should be easy. You won't do much better with a 240, and it will be considerably slower.

Your mileage should not be based on 2 fill-ups. There are alot of variables that can affect mileage, average it over time.

I was told be the previous owner that 30mpg was the norm and told by Pierre that 28ish mpg could be expected. What the heck is knocking it down 10mpg?? Pierre said he thought my valves need adjusting(they are tight he said). Is this alone the problem or are there other factors?

Are you sure your turbo is working properly and the boost is getting to the Alda? Check your overboost protection valve, boost line and banjo bolt. Verify proper valve adjustment. Make sure your engine is running at normal operating temperature--a cold diesel is very inefficient and will really suck fuel.

What car do you have and what MPG do you get?
My 1982 300d will consistently get attain 26- 28 hwy.

I'm curious as to his D-T ruling, actually. Its not quite as atrocious as a plain DT.

My MB mileage certificate award show my car to be a 300D-T. Mine is the '82 year model built in Oct 1981. The 81 model year sedan and coupe did not have the turbo. The -T may be MB's way of noting the difference.

I still read the "trunk badge of truth"

I've gotten between 23 and 32 on my 240. I usually do around-town driving. I don't know what my differential ratio is, whatever the factory gave it.
