The $800 W116

Ok...So I have to show off my $800 '80 300SD to people who will appreciate it! I bought it with a no reverse condition, so I pulled the tranny and replaced the reverse band. While I was down there, I went ahead and replaced the engine mounts, tranny mount, flex discs and center bearing.

Last week I rebuilt most of the front suspension, except for the LCA bushings and lower ball joints which still look pretty good. I found the chrome hub caps on Ebay, and when I got them I was amazed...they had definately never been on a car before, but looked like that were in a warehouse for the last 30 years. I paid $14.50 for all of them, plus $15.00 shipping. It had some nice bundts on it, but they desperately needed painting, and the tires were awful. I just put new Kumho's on it last Friday.

I've sorted through various gremlins, did a diesel purge, sorted some throttle linkage issues and did a thorough detail.

I am the 3rd documented owner, it was garaged with an older couple who bought it new. They died in 2006 and it went to an estate sale, where a guy here in town bought it. He did not keep it garaged, so I've got a few little dings here and there, but overall it is in great shape. NO RUST...anywhere..at all...which I understand is a big issue for the 116's.

I'm going to completely r&r the a/c system sometime in the next couple of weeks...and it needs an oil pan gasket and valve adjust which I will finish up this coming week.

I've been trying to think of a name...I was thinking "pudding"...since it looks like vanilla pudding...but that doesn't seem very dignified for such a classy car...any ideas?

Thanks! I am proud of it...I get compliments on it almost every time I drive it anywhere. My neighbors probably think I'm nuts since I'm always doing something to it.....

Very fine looking car, my 81 240 is a similar color but in my mind more like cream than beige
Is that a cup holder in the second pic of the door?

For $800 that car is fantastic, well done! Although you gotta admit, replacing the reverse band isn't an easy job.

Yes...The previous owners apparently installed those. I don't particularly care for them, but they are screwed in and I'm sure it would be noticeable if they were gone.

They do work well though...and at least the color matches up pretty good.

Yes...I was hoping the reverse band was going to be an easy fix, but the collar where the strut attaches just split in half. It's a wonder that the whole tranny didn't get fried with that big chunk of metal floating around.

At least the band was right on the front of the tranny, so it was easy to get to once it was out of the car....plus it gave me a chance to do a very thorough inspection of the innards....which all looked clean.

I think the adjustment strut had been over torqued at some point and snapped the band.

Wow, I'm impressed, and a little jealous! For $800 I would say that car is very much worth all your hard work! Congrats. I love the color, too.

X3!!!

Glad to hear the reverse band was not that bad, once you could get to it, did you drop the tranny, or pull the engine with it? I've heard that sometimes it is difficult to get everything aligned when one is left in the car on these . . .

I just pulled the tranny....I bought the cheap scissor jack at harbor freight and it worked out great. I took the engine shocks out and got as much rear tilt on the engine when I reinstalled everything...so I could come up with the tranny at an angle. It was easier to keep the torque converter in that way.
