Cool my brother just bought a russian AIR cooled diesel tractor...

very cool tractor. I get to tear it apart and clean it up for better performance.
no glow plugs, it has a compression release, and you hit the starter and get the huge flywheel up to speed, and BOOOM it starts right up.
only 2 cylinders. 37HP...
massive air fan on the thing... the seller swore the tractor was a turbo because of this fan, but it's just a cylinder cooling fan.
I'll try to get some pictures up when I tear into it.
I also have to adjust the clutch... 5 pages of instructions for adjusting the clutch... gonna have fun with this one.

Hi

These things can be lots of fun. Years back my brother put a 100HP 5 Cyl air-cooled Deutz diesel in a 1972 Ford 3/4 ton pickup. Lots of viberation and noise but would that thing haul!

There were some early Russian and European diesel tractors (without glowplugs) that had a port to insert an explosive charge to assist cold starts while cranking........relatives in europe had one when my dad was growing up.

For weird beasts I ran across one a couple of decades ago. A ~30-40 HP 1 cylinder (yes, one) diesel engine for a generator. Rather than a traditional starter motor there was a more conventional electric motor. To start it there was a lever that would prop the exhaust valve open (obviously a non-interference design) and disable the IP, the starter motor would spin the engine with its gigantic flywheel up to speed, then you would flip the lever which would re-engage the valve and start the fuel flow.

Loud as heck when uncovered but with the shocks and sound cover in place it was quiet. The main benefit was that it was extremely efficient. It's been too long to remember the exact fuel rate but IIRC a 50 gallon tank would run it for a week.

Just curious, do you remember the RPMs that would spin at? I have to imagine it would be pretty low.

Ya, BMC also made a small diesel tractor....I believe under their Austin badge.
It only ran up to 1K rpm at the most...but lots of torque out of the little unit

Had a belarus for a little while, very stout tractor. One nice feature it had was power down on the 3 point hitch
