83 300SD DIY or NOT???

The Mercedes dealership said I needed a new left brake strut and a steering wheel shock absorber. It would cost over $1,000 for them to do this work. What is a left brake strut? Is there another name that I should be using for it and can anyone direct me to some help as to how to replace them? Thanks Rick
