83 300SD DIY or NOT???

The Mercedes dealership said I needed a new left brake strut and a steering wheel shock absorber. It would cost over $1,000 for them to do this work. What is a left brake strut? Is there another name that I should be using for it and can anyone direct me to some help as to how to replace them? Thanks Rick

They are probably talking about the left guide rod/mount. Mine have been bad for a long time, I just drive anyways. Seems to make no difference. Replacing them is a bit involved....

As for the steering shock, that is super easy to replace. Two bolts, remove, insert new, re-install bolts. Done. Look under the car and you will see it and how easy it is to remove. Should take less than 10 minutes.

I just did my guide rod mounts and a tie rod. The tie rod was harder, but only because I couldn't get the inner joint to pop.

Here's a link to a DIY.

DIY Bearing Bracket guide rod mount replacement for Mercedes Benz 300SD.

This pretty much details the effort. If you live in a dry climate where rust isn't an issue then it's a very simple R&R. (At least it was for me... kinda. See my posts in the DIY thread.) If you live where you may have issues with the captive nuts, then all bets are off and the dealer (or reputable indy mechanic) may be the best way to go.

After replacement, my suspension is much quieter, and I got rid of some knocking when going over certain bumps/rough road.

Steering damper is verrrrry simple, as stated above.

good luck!

Fear of the unknown

Could be easy or impossible Rick. Depends on you...

No special tools required for either job. I've done both on dirt floors.
Owning a 26+ yr old MB pretty much requires diy.

Guide rod bushing R&R (brake strut):

The steering shock (dampener) is real simple, two bolts.
Here's your part:

You will need the front end aligned afterwards.

Lots of support here if needed.

Good luck.

Dan

Well I purchased the steering wheel shock and you were right. That was easy to replace. About the easiest thing I've ever replaced on this car. Now on to that other................way more difficult item. I'm sure I'll be in touch.
