The IP? Two hooks on either side, Mercedes dash removal tools.

Good point. For whatever reason, I've only had this problem on my 124 so I guess I'm lucky...for now!

Here's a pic of my fix, sorry it's out of focus:

Did you buy a rebuild kit and do it yourself or did the shop do it? Do you have a rebuild shop you recommend, or a part number on the rebuild kit?
Let me know,
Thanks

I'm new to "quoting." This is in reference to the post two up from here....

That's a good looking work-around. I, too, repaired my non-working Odo on my '87 300TD. Having read this thread prior to the repair, and seeing Jeff's post that simply re-inserting the shaft would only be a temporary fix, I figured if there were a way to physically keep the shaft from backing out the "repair" might last longer. I mounted a solid wire to the two screws behind the speedometer face plate (opposite the side on which you mounted your bracket). You can just make out the head of the screws in your photo. I bent the wire ends into a hook so so they would wrap around the screws and hammered them flat, so they're more like a washer, if you will. Then I just bent the stubby "U-shaped" wire around so it was not quite touching the shaft and put a dab of white lube on it, just in case the shaft did back out. The screws mount up tight and there are no clearance problems. I have no idea if this will work and only about 1000 miles on it, so I'm not claiming any success. But it was quick and easy.

I had a local shop do it (actually happens to be about a mile from my indy, http://www.tacomaspeedometer.com/). I brought it in and the guy pretty much said they do a lot of these VDO units for this same failure. It was about $100 out the door, parts and labor. They also throw in a speed calibration on all repairs/rebuilds. It was only about 1mph off at 60 before and it was dead on when I got it back.

Don't have any photos as the car is back home hibernating in WA now.

My odometer works but my trip doesn't.

However, if the mile markers on I-27 are accurately spaced there is a slight error on my ODO.

I am reading to have traveled slightly more than a mile between markers.

It's not a lot, like a quarter mile per 30 miles traveled according to the mile markers.

Well damn, my odo quit again this week. Forget my "solution." I picked up an instrument binnacle for the circuit board and it's time to start cannibalizing more parts!

Digital/Electric?

My '87 300DT has the same issue as all the above. Anyone get tired of fooling with the factory speedo/odo & gone with a electronic/digital unit?

I know, I know, the purists among us will have a fit, but many of us do not live near a PNP or dealership - we just don't have parts sources within a 100 or so miles. Also, there comes a time when it just ain't worth fixing again & again. Sorry......
