83 mercedes 300d vacuum lines
i just purchased a 300d turbo and i noticed the a/c only comes out the defrost and the side vents. under the hood by the brake booster there is a 3 way vacuum line in whick only one is hooked up and the other 2 are capped off. when i hook them up, the air switches over to the center vents as it should but i am no longer able to turn the car off. i quess the person prior to me adjusted the vacuum lines so the car would turn off but sacrificed the air going to the defrost. what is actually wrong so i can have it hooked up correct and also be able to turn the car off?

You'll probably get better replies in the Diesel Discussion forum, but it appears you have a vacuum leak. They are a pain in the a** to find, but at least you know where to start - somewhere downstream of the capped off lines. There is a vacuum diagram floating around on here somewhere. Maybe the DIY forum. GL

Bad vacuum pod somewhere in the climate control system. Lots of info on how to fix over on the diesel discussion. George Murphy can supply parts (search for his phone number). Could be simple or it could be a pain in the *ss to fix.
What color were the unhooked lines? If yellow, it could also be a leak in the door locking system.

yellow is one of the lines and you are correct, the door locks dont work. the other is green. if i remember correctly, the green may have had a yellow strip on it.

The vacuum lines are color coded. the green vac line is for your climate control. under your dash there are about 5 to 6 vac pods that open and close various things to direct the air to the proper opening depending on the button pushed.
The two brown lines are to turn the engine off. One line should be conected to the back of the Injection pump. there is a little can looking device which is a vac pod that pulls a little gizmo internaly that turns the fuel off. Both lines are connected to the back if the ignition switch to a vac valve that is actuated when the key is turned. The yellow pod is a check valve. one line going in, and two yellow lines coming out. one line goes to the drivers door, which controls the other three doors, fuel door and trunk vac actuators. lift the carpet on the drivers side, and you will see some rubber "T`s" and vac lines,, yellow with red stripe (lock side) and yellow with green stripe (unlock side) The other yellow line coming out of the check valve, runs to the back of the car, above the fuel tank. there is a black plastic tank that holds the vacuum only so the car can be locked and unlocked 6 to 10 times. A Mity-Vac is something you will need to chase down these evel little gremlins that are a constant plague from time to time. The large black vac line is connected to the Vacuum pump on the front on the engine. the other end is connected to the brake booster. All these above vac lines get their source of vac from this line. be careful not to break off one of the little plastic nipples they connect to. Charlie
