Fuel Leak!

I finally got the fuel filter loose and changed it. I also found out why someone had put it on so tight, I can't get it to quit leaking. It doesn't leak around the gasket but the bolt on top leaks just a little bit, getting it tighter doesn't seem to do any good and I don't want to get it so tight I won't be able to get it off again. Anybody have an idea what the problem could be and how to fix it?

Talking

Yup, just like Sixto showed you. Go to a Kragen or any parts store and look for orings.. I lucked out and the guy just gave em to me.
Good luck, I hope this fixes your problems.
BTW make sure the new orings aren't too thick. Mine were a bit thicker and I had a hard time screwing the bolt into the filter.

Thanks, the old rings must be pinched because the bolt doesn't want to come out, I'm sure new ones will fix it.

correct seals

The big screw that holds the main fuel filter is supposed to have a metal seal ring just under the head of the bolt on the outside of the filter holder housing, and a rubber ring on the shaft of the bolt next to the filter. About 40 cents each at Performance, probably a buck each at the dealer.

Question

Are you sure it is supposed to have a metal seal. I asked about that on this board and one replied that there are no metal seals and to just replace the orings. Cured the leak.

yes, I'm positive

If you put an O ring under the head of the bolt, it will compress and distort when you try to tighten. This is just like any drain plug...they all seal with a metal ring just under the head of a bold between two contact surfaces. O rings are used to seal things that pull together without twisting motion. Metal seal rings are used were contact surfaces twist while tightening...such as with drain plugs, and this filter screw.

Every one I've ever seen has a copper ring under the bolt.

Thanks a lot. I'll look for a washer or my filter bolt.

go to a dealer

Just to clarify....dont just use any washer.....a sealing ring is soft metal...usually copper. The washer "crushes" and fills voids as you tighten ...that is how it seals. Dont use a steel washer....won't work!

Modified fuel filter housing!

Go into your local MB dealer and order a modified fuel filter housing and the bolt that goes with it. Rather than using a sealing ring at the top, it's a new type which just uses o-rings. The through-hole that the bolt goes through is tapered and it stops leaks. Your parts guy will see on his computer that the original part # supercedes many times.

Question

Aaron, I think I have that kind already. Mine has two orings, one smaller than the other and the bolt is tapered. If I do have the newer style, do I need to add a washer? Thanks.

Is there an obvious part number to check?
