If you use some emery cloth around the center hole of the FW you'l usually find the little 1/2 +-inch long mark if its there.

I believe the marks are on the surface where the flywheel mates to the crank, between the bolts. Still a good idea to mark the fw to the crank before removing.

The machine shop said both the flex plate and clutch disc were neutrally balanced. Should I assemble using my markings from TDC or the one marked by MB on the flywheel from the donor car?

Be sure to check the new flywheel too. The clutch disc will always be neutral.

It will have to be spun, I believe.

You need to take the Flywheels to a speed and machine shop, someone that understands what you are talking about. they need the equipment that can spin then to see where each one is.
we only have one here is Santa Cruz that can do it, yet we have machine shops that can turn a FW. the shop I used builds engines for Hotrods/Streetrods, they do some incredable work with the body work also. If I remember right, the auto fw was off by 10 grams and the manual off by 3 of being neutral. Charlie

Would a sachs 240D clutch kit suffice in the 300D?

Depends. Stock, yes. There are a variety of pressure plates with different clamping pressures.

I used that for both my 300 turbo and my 300 euro non turbo motors with complete satisfaction so far. We have been running each for over 3 years.

For what it's worth, our conversion went perfectly and yielded 5 good years, before selling it.
1. Didn't monkey with balancing FW, tho the advice here is good. 2. Used a FW from a 300 parts car 3. Used a 123 chassis that was a 240 4-speed 4. Brought the drive shaft in from the donor car 5. Shortened the splines for the tranny 6. New pilot bearing 7. Swapped out the differential for a better ratio Cheap, fun and relatively easy dd

Ok. I ordered the 240 clutch kit (pressure plate, clutch disc and throwout bearing). Just waiting on the arrival of the flywheel bolts. MB accidentally ordered the incorrect FW bolts from the auto. So I wont be continuing until at least Tuesday

If you use the wrong fw bolts it may bind it all up.
IIRC the automatic bolts are a little longer and will hit the block after going all the way through the crank flange...at least on the 280e.
